Executive Summary
African American Women Jumping Timelines Project was inspired by my personal experiences and academic studies in organizational culture and leadership. Timeline jumping is a process where you start to consciously create your life. It is saying yes to what you desire and allow transformation to happen. I grew up in a family with a history of addiction, homelessness, and incarceration, which has shaped my understanding of the challenges faced by marginalized communities. Additionally, my grandparents' migration to Seattle as part of The Great Migration and their experiences with addiction, homelessness, and resilience have deeply influenced my perspective.
In my educational journey, I faced cultural challenges and struggled to find psychological safety in predominantly white schools. Despite these challenges, I developed a training program for King County Public Health that connected concepts of psychological safety, organizational cultures of learning, microaggressions, and white supremacy culture characteristics. This work led me to become involved in various initiatives aimed at addressing issues related to anti-blackness and misogyny within the community.
My professional experiences, including working in the Seattle Public Utilities Call Center and being involved with the South King County Discipline Coalition, have further shaped my understanding of the systemic barriers faced by marginalized communities, particularly those affected by the school-to-prison pipeline. My interactions with influential figures in the Black community, such as Dr. Sheila Edwards-Lange and Kristina Clark, have provided me with mentorship and guidance, inspiring me to create the African American Women Jumping Timelines Project.
The African American Women Jumping Timelines Project is designed to cater to the diverse needs of Black women in King and Pierce counties. By combining various healing approaches and addressing topics such as intergenerational trauma, misogynoir, and systemic violence, the project aims to empower Black women to navigate and heal from their experiences. My background in executive consultation and coaching, specifically geared towards Black women and individuals within the LGBTQIA+ community, has equipped me with the skills and insights to support my community effectively.
Ultimately, the African American Women Jumping Timelines Project is a culmination of my personal journey, academic background, and passion for empowering Black women. It aims to equip Black women with the tools for success and dismantle harmful narratives that have historically held us back. This program aspires to create a future where Black women can thrive and "Stand on Business," reclaiming their agency and leadership in their communities.
